Profile

Michael Horton KC is a barrister, mediator and family arbitrator, specialising in matrimonial finance and family property law. He is a part-time judge of the High Court of the Isle of Man, and of the family court in England and Wales, authorised to hear family finance cases. His practice is focussed on high net worth divorces, but he also specialises in property disputes between unmarried couples. He has appeared in two family law cases before the UK Supreme Court. He has particular experience of cross-border enforcement and forum disputes, and drafting affidavits of laws for use in foreign proceedings. He has recently undertaken several cases under Part III of the Matrimonial and Family Proceedings Act 1984, and sought to argue that the English court cannot make provision following a foreign divorce which would be inconsistent with a foreign order or authentic instrument which is entitled to recognition under the Maintenance Regulation or Hague Convention 2007. In addition, he has a substantial practice in advising on and drafting pre-nuptial and post-nuptial agreements, as well as cohabitation contracts. He regularly gives lectures on current developments in family law, including the recent no fault divorce reforms, and emerging trends in post-divorce maintenance. He mostly lives in Norfolk with his family, cats, chickens, but sadly bees no longer.
