In 2025 the IAFL established the IAFL Institute of Further Learning for family lawyers who have practiced for approximately 6-7 years and who wish to elevate their knowledge and expand the reach of their practices. The curriculum includes subjects universally related to the practice of family law and topics intended to enable the practitioner to identify issues involving cross-border legal questions and/or applicable international Conventions.
Established in 2025, the Institute aims to mentor, educate, and introduce attorneys to issues of international practice while providing a network of similarly situated and interested peers from different jurisdictions and cultures. The curriculum involves ten two-hour modules which are held virtually on the last Tuesday of each month from September through to June. The cohort is limited to a maximum of 12 attorneys and it is intended that the cohort will comprise individuals from a number of different jurisdictions. The discussions in each session will invite participating lawyers to contribute questions and perspectives from their different legal and cultural environments. Participants are encouraged to speak freely within an environment of mutually agreed privacy. The inaugural cohort included attorneys from 10 different jurisdictions.
Those who complete the course receive a complimentary registration to the 2027 IAFL Annual Meeting which will take place in Mumbai from 15-19 September.
Applications for the 2026-27 cohort are now invited. The full curriculum can be found here. The application form can be found here. Completed applications should be returned by email and should be received no later than midnight BST (UTC+!) on Monday 3 August. Successful applicants will be notified during the week commencing 17 August 2026. The first module will take place on Tuesday 29 September at 2 PM BST (UTC +1).
