PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 7 SEPTEMBER 2025
Statement in support of the protection of Fundamental Human Rights for LGBTIQ Kenyans, Refugees, and Asylum Seekers in Kenya and Worldwide
The International Academy of Family Lawyers (IAFL) affirms its support for the protection of fundamental human rights of LGBTIQ persons in Kenya and the region. We welcome the ongoing steps toward the decriminalisation of consensual same-sex/gender relations.
We reaffirm our commitment to efforts aimed at achieving full equality for LGBTIQ+ Kenyans towards the freedom of association for LGBTIQ+ organizations, family rights, parenting, and protection from domestic violence and any forms of harmful conversion practices, both in Kenya and around the world. We advocate for the elimination of laws that unfairly discriminate against LGBTIQ+ citizenry and criminalize countless couples based solely on who couples love.
At its annual meeting in Nairobi, Kenya, 3-7 September 2025, the International Academy of Family Lawyers issued the above press release articulating its position of support for Fundamental Human Rights for LGBTQ+ persons in Kenya and worldwide. This followed the launch of a new IAFL guide which deals with the laws relevant to LGBTQ+ people in 56 jurisdictions including the hate legislation that exists in some and whose effects are felt in the everyday lives of LGBTQ+ persons worldwide as well.
The IAFL Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Committee has worked hand in hand with the Executive Committee in raising awareness, educating its members, and providing this public statement of support concerning Human Rights for LGBTQ+ persons.
