Tuesday 27th May 2014

Diana Bryant AO, Chief Justice of the Family court of Australia discussed the following 3 topics:
  1. Australia/US cases and issues in relation to the Abduction Convention including direct judicial communication.
  2. Australia's experience with the 1996 Child Protection Convention which although not yet ratified by the US, obliges member states to apply it in certain circumstances anyway; discussion included a case study discussing these themes.
  3. The work of the Working Group (which Justice Bryant chairs) tasked by the Permanent Bureau to develop a Guide to Good Practice for Article 13(b) - the grave risk defense.
